Thumb Latches date back to the 13th century with early examples made from wood. Iron latches became common place in Britain in the 1700s. Still a popular choice today, thumb Latches are one of the most evocative pieces of ironmongery available and are ideal for creating an authentic feel in any restoration project. Typically used on ledged and braced doors they are perfectly paired with our collection of 18” T Hinges.

The thumb piece passes through the door and raises the latch bar off the keep creating a charming clanking sound as it does so. A staple pin or screw-on staple is used to restrict the latch bar movement. A traditional staple pin needs driving into and through the door whereas a screw-on staple pin is surfaced fixed. Our latch sets are supplied with both so simply recycle the unused pin by finding another use for it around the home.

A locking staple pin can be purchased separately. It prevents the latch bar from moving completely and is useful for bathroom doors.

Our thumb latches are available in a Bean or Gothic style and in a selection of sizes and finishes. Each Latch is forged by hand from mild steel. Our Beeswax finish is the probably the most authentic. It offers a subtle, matt richness to the metal. The Black finish looks great against painted doors and our unique Pewter Patina finish complements natural oak wonderfully.
